Taking Ner to the next level logo

Ner Yisrael has run out of space!

The Ner Yisrael Community in Hendon was founded in 1984 as an independent, modern, orthodox Jewish community. It was set up to be intellectually and socially modern, while at the same time totally orthodox and with a tremendous eagerness for learning and a passion for education. Ner is Zionist and inclusive in its outlook and welcomes speakers from all over the world.

Ner has also been at the forefront of launching many of the most innovative communal programmes in London including tikkun leyl, Tisha b'Av events, ladies' shiurim programmes and the evening Beit Medrash programme for post yeshiva students. Rabbi Kimche, the original (and now Emeritus) Rav and members of the community were also instrumental in setting up the North West London Eruv, and the ranks of buggies outside each week and throughout North- West London are testament both to its value and to the rapid growth of the community!

All of this needed a place to happen. Ner Yisrael was started by a small group of families who met to daven in a room at Jews' College in Hendon. It acquired its current premises in The Crest, off Brent Street in September 1986, and the Theo & Marthe Klein Community Centre was dedicated in 1989. As the community grew, the synagogue was enlarged, and, in 2000, neighbouring buildings were acquired and converted to serve as the HaRav Jakobovits Centre housing the Horowitz Beit Hamedrash. In 2004/5 further extension works were carried out to the main building which expanded the main body of the shul as well the building of the new Sha'ar Yaacov Beit Hamedrash, a state-of-the-art kitchen and purpose-built offices to house the shul's administrative staff.

We need to take Ner to the next level

But, we've run out of room! To house the growing number of minyanim, we need more space to daven. To be viable, a new room will need to be on the second floor of the main building. There are disabled members of our community who will need to access it and so we need not just a room but a lift and wheelchair accessible facilities too. There is currently no such second floor in the main building.

It so happens that the roof of the main shul has reached the end of its life. It leaks, lets in water and cannot be economically repaired. It needs to be replaced as light fittings are coming down and there is water ingress which has already damaged some of our sifrei torah. However, the programme of building a new second floor room will encompass a replacement of the roof anyway - so accomplishing both aims.

To manage the cost of all this, we are blessed to have some incredibly generous matchers. We need to raise £600,000 - which will allow the construction of a new second floor room over the main building, disability-friendly access to it, and the replacement of the shul's dying roof. Our matchers have kindly agreed to match every pound donated until we reach our target!
